My Introduction Empty My Introduction

Message par LaVernJ Ven 28 Oct - 1:25

Hello all,
I hope this is the correct place to post. I have been browsing this forum for quite some time now. I am 71 yrs. old and have been retired from my factory job as a machinist for almost 17 yrs. I My wife and I have a small farm from which we get most of our meat, eggs, and until last year, most of our milk. I also have a small wood and metal working shop with various machines to keep me occupied.

I am the original owner of a 1975 Suzuki RL250, and a recently acquired a 1975 Honda Tl250. I did some reconditioning,  though I wouldn't say restoring on these. I now have my sons 1977 TY250.  Number on headstock and engine is  493-200127. I think these numbers indicate a 1977 TY. It has been at least 15 yrs. since it has run. It just quit running with no spark.  About 10 yrs. ago my son asked me to see if I could get it started. I've been busy with other things and I am just now getting around to it. Engine was froze a bit. For the last month or so I had been putting various mixtures of acetone and ATF, and finally "Marvel Mystery Oil" into the cylinder in anticipation of this moment. Surprisingly once I removed the head and saw that it was on TDC it took very little to free it up. I just made a flywheel wrench to rock it back and forth ever so gently until it broke free. With the head off, I can now turn it over very easily by hand. There was no spark. Checking the wires, I found nothing out of place. There are three wires coming out of "stator?".  One black which goes to the coil, and two others that have nothing attached to them. I assume these were for lighting perhaps? From the coil there is a wire to the kill switch. On this black wire from stator to the ignition coil is a diode. I removed the diode and now there is spark.  What is this diode for? I did just order a shop service manual, but I thought I would take this time to introduce myself and ask my first question. Also can I, and if so where and how do I post pictures. Thanks for any help and advice you may have.

LaVern

Hello LaVernj,
Thank you for your presentation and welcome to the TY forum.

- In answer to your question, you can start your TY without this diode. It is theoretically used to start the engine in the right direction.
Look on this page at the post of a forum member:
https://www.forum-ty.com/t2513-faisceau-minimaliste-mais-pas-seulement?highlight=diode#31418

- In your presentation you say: << The engine was a bit frozen. So the bike was in a wet place..... (?) So you should also look at the "platinum screws" (the switch) because there can be a lot of oxidation. The anti-parasitic capacitor should also be checked.
- There is indeed only the black wire which is used for the ignition. The others are for lighting, indicators etc...
- It is also useful to clean the carburetor.

It is better to open your subject in the section:

Bonjour LaVernj,

https://www.forum-ty.com/t2513-faisceau-minimaliste-mais-pas-seulement?highlight=diode#31418

Hi, LaVern
Welcome on board !
Several days of work await you, isn't it!
Do you think this color and decal are genuine one's?
As you can check on this board your serial number matches with 77 model.

Maitre capello,
I definitely have my work cut out for me, and to add to that my son now wants me to not just get it running, but is talking a full restoration! I think I can do a lot of the work, but such things as powder coating will be in others hands.

As for the colors, I do think from what I've seen the colors and the decals are original. I don't know about the frame but it being as rusty as it is, I suspect it has never been refinished. And speaking of colors, is there someplace where the original paint codes are available? My son has already said he would like to bring it back to a full restoration. Thanks for replying to my post.

Salut Pascal,

Maitre Capello,
I agree, I just wish I was able to communicate and understand better. Google Translate is better than nothing, but sometimes things get lost in the translation. I do understand that I have a lot to do in front of me. I look forward to future help from all of you.
